Insight provides two CHT type of probes. Spring probes which screw into the cylinder head thermowell, and Gasket Probes which replaces the spark plug gasket. Gasket Probes are recommended for use anytime Spring Probes cannot be used i.e. when TANIS preheaters are used.

The Gasket Probe uses the same J-Type thermocouple as the Spring Probe. This probe replaces the gasket on 18mm spark plugs. The J-Type thermocouple has red and white color coded wires. Note that the spark plug plugs in some engines may run 50 to 100 Fahrenheit degrees hotter than the thermowell.

The gasket probe is recommended for use anytime the spring probe cannot be used. Aircraft fitted with thermowell TANIS preheaters should use the CHT Gasket probes.

Adapter probes are used in conjunction with the original manufactures CHT probes. These threaded probes fit into the cylinder heads thermowell. They are available in versions to accept threaded or bayonet type OEM probes.

The EGT probe consists of a special alloy sheath connected to a stainless steel clamp.

The probe tip is installed in a small hole in the exhaust stack, secured by an adjustable clamp.

Before drilling, ensure that nothing interferes with the probe, clamp, screw or wire. Center punch and pilot drill each hole in the exhaust stack with a No. 28 or 9/64” drill bit. Use caution while drilling perpendicular to the stack to prevent an elongated hole. NOTE: Tighten the clamp screw with hand-torque nut driver only.

WARNING about installing probes

The minimum radius of bends in wire groups or bundles must not be less than 10 times the outside diameter of the largest wire or cable, except that at the terminal strips where wires break out at terminations or re-verse direction in a bundle. Where the wire is suitably supported, the radius may be 3 times the diameter of the wire or cable. Where it is not practical to install wiring or cables within the radius requirements, the bend should be en-closed in insulating tubing. The radius for thermocouple wire is 20 times the diameter.
